Curious minds of all ages are invited to explore, experiment and discover as Celebrate Science returns to Locomotion in Shildon this October half term.
Taking place from Tuesday 27 October to Thursday 29 October 2026, the free annual festival will transform the museum into a hub of hands-on activities, live demonstrations and interactive exhibits designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.
Running from 10am to 4pm each day, the three-day event will give families the opportunity to meet scientists, get involved in exciting experiments and discover the science behind the world around us. We are expecting this to be a busy event, so we are asking visitors to pre-book free, timed admission slots via Locomotion's website.
Now in its 15th year, Celebrate Science has become one of the region's most popular family science events, bringing together researchers, students, educators and community partners to share the excitement of science in fun and engaging ways.
Visitors can explore space in the planetarium, investigate forces and energy, explore the wonders of the human body and try a variety of practical activities. From launching paper rockets and creating mini volcanoes to testing wind turbines and experimenting with static electricity, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn by doing.
The event will also showcase the enthusiasm and creativity of local school Science Ambassadors who will be sharing their own activities and helping inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.
Throughout the festival, Durham University scientists and student ambassadors will be on hand to answer questions, share their research and reveal the fascinating science behind everyday life. Visitors will be encouraged to think about some of the biggest questions facing our world, from understanding our place in the Universe to creating a healthier and more sustainable future.
Celebrate Science 2026 is a partnership between Durham University and Locomotion, part of the Science Museum Group. The event is also supported by Science Ambassadors from local schools, Beamish Museum, Boulby Underground Laboratory, English Heritage, the Institute of Physics, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, the North Pennines National Landscape, Livin Housing, UKRI, the Reece Foundation and the William and Frances Dobie Charitable Foundation.
Whether you're a budding scientist, an aspiring engineer or simply looking for an inspiring family day out, Celebrate Science 2026 promises three unforgettable days of discovery and fun at Locomotion.
