One of our leading tech experts is helping cut through the hype surrounding AI so people better understand how it could shape everyday life.
Sue Black, OBE is a Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist in our Department of Computer Science.
She has joined forces with fellow computer scientist Dame Wendy Hall to launch the “AI&Us: with Wendy Hall and Sue Black” podcast.
The podcast discusses the opportunities, risks and real-world impact of AI in simple terms.
It addresses the big questions surrounding AI, including concerns about job losses and autonomous machines.
It also looks at how AI could improve healthcare, education and efforts to tackle climate change.
In episode one, Professor Black and Dame Wendy argue that popular fears about science-fiction style robots can distract from more important discussions about how AI is developed and governed.
Instead, they focus on the people, decisions and ideas that will influence whether the technology benefits society.
So many of the technologies we use every day have been shaped by a relatively narrow group of people. AI gives us an extraordinary opportunity to broaden that perspective: to identify the problems that matter most to us and create products and solutions that address them. We now have the chance to build technology that reflects a far wider range of experiences, perspectives and needs. Let’s ensure this exciting new wave of AI innovation works for everyone.
The podcast has been created by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.
BCS represents a community of nearly 70,000 technology professionals worldwide. This includes Professor Black, who founded BCSWomen in 1988, and Dame Wendy, who is a Distinguished Fellow.
The podcast launch comes just ahead of Ada Lovelace Day on 13 October.
This annual event celebrates Ada Lovelace, who is widely regarded as the world’s first computer programmer.
