Saturday Morning Science

Our new series of talks and demonstrations will bring cutting edge science from teams in Durham University to the City Centre. These sessions will share our enthusiasm for science, the sometimes unexpected journeys of exploration and ultimately the breakthroughs from the laboratories of scientists within our Institute.

More about the Biophysical Sciences Institute

What to expect from the sessions

  • Each session will last 40 minutes, with two or three different speakers sharing their research using talks, visual aids and demonstrations.
  • This will be followed by 10 minutes where the speakers will answer any questions.
  • Then there will be time afterwards for refreshments (free) where the audience, speakers and other members of the teams carrying out the research can chat about the science and (where safe) get hands-on with demonstrations.

The Science

These sessions will focus on research that blurs the lines between scientific subjects. We will share the latest breakthroughs from scientists whose works bend the traditional boundaries of the natural sciences, encompassing physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, psychology, and engineering.

This is a powerful approach as it harnesses new tools, for example, when imaging biological structures, developing mathematical and computational approaches to explore and understand how biological systems work and bringing physics principles to understand the multitude of forces that shape the behaviour of living systems.

Our Institute – the Biophysical Sciences Institute, stands at the frontiers of the scientific disciplines and the academics and researchers who make our community special are passionate about this approach.

Our Saturday Morning Science talks will bring the research from our teams of researchers out of the laboratories and share our enthusiasm for science discovery.

Do I Need to Register?
