Professor Angela Woods, Director of the Institute for Medical Humanities, talks about the impact of Medical Humanities and the scope of the postgraduate taught Medical Humanities programme at Durham University.
We have designed a bespoke programme in Medical Humanities that is unique for both its interdisciplinary breadth and its innovative curriculum and assessment design. Students can expect coursework that taps into their own backgrounds, interests, and aspirations; modules taught by a wide range of field-leading experts; a community of like-minded researchers lending expertise and support; and an educational model that facilitates peer-to-peer learning among an international student cohort.
The MA in Medical Humanities provides rich interdisciplinary training that is ideal not only for those aspiring to a PhD but also for those working in medicine, non-profits, policy settings, bioethics, and any context where health inequality and critical medical debates are vital.
The opportunity to select modules from different departments and learn from a range of disciplines was stimulating and exciting. The academic culture is vibrant and well established, while simultaneously remaining open to diverse perspectives, ideas, and people from different backgrounds. If you are an international student, regardless of your disciplinary or cultural background, I believe you will find the programme both accessible and engaging, and you will be exceptionally well supported by a genuine community of people who deeply care about both their work and those they work alongside.
Superb course design: dividing the content into sections titled “read”, “watch”, “explore” and “discuss” caters to different learning styles and makes the materials come alive (and adds an element of… fun!). A varied range of assessments invites deep reflection and can be also readily applied in different professional and academic contexts.
This programme has been designed to welcome graduates from across the humanities and social sciences, intercalating medical students and individuals with professional experience or career aspirations in clinical, policy or other health-related settings.
