Dr Edward Payne will discuss his book manuscript in progress for Reaktion’s Renaissance Lives series. The book explores the arresting paintings, prints, and drawings of Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652). As a Spanish artist working in Naples, Ribera had a significant impact on the art of both Spain and Italy. This book interprets Ribera’s artworks in the round, weaving together his various subjects, materials, patrons, and audiences. Grounding his art in the social, cultural, and religious context of early modern Naples, the volume offers new insights into Ribera’s artistic practice.

About the speaker: Dr Edward Payne is Senior Lecturer in Art History at Stockholm University. A specialist in the arts and visual cultures of early modern Europe, he engages with themes including violence, skin, sensory perception, caricature, and ugliness. Edward has organized several exhibitions in the US and UK, notably Ribera: Art of Violence (Dulwich Picture Gallery, 2018–19), and he was a contributor to the recent exhibition Ribera: Ténèbres et lumière (Petit Palais, 2024–25). Edward has held research fellowships at the British School at Rome (2009), the Clark Art Institute (2021), and the Danish Academy in Rome (2026).
