Abstract: This event introduces the volume Art, Travel, and Exchange between Iberia and Global Geographies, c. 1400–1550 (Brill, 2025), co-edited by Costanza Beltrami and Sylvia Alvares Correa. Spanning 13 chapters by international scholars in art history and conservation science, the book explores different media, regions, and processes of exchange to interrogate Iberia’s position as a diffuse and interconnected artistic centre. The presentation offers a critical reflection on the book’s genesis and argument, and ideas for new directions of travel in the field of Iberian studies.

About the speaker: Dr Costanza Beltrami is Senior Lecturer in Art History at Stockholm University. Currently, she is also Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Technische Universität in Berlin. Her work explores Gothic art and architecture in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, with a particular focus on the Spanish region of Castile and its international connections. Her primary research interests include architectural drawings, transculturation, and materiality. Among other topics, she has published on Gothic architectural drawing (Building a Crossing Tower: A Design for Rouen Cathedral of 1516, Paul Holberton, 2016); ornamental prints as models for painters (‘A Print Source for a Painting by Gerard David’, The Burlington Magazine, 2020), the construction and perception of time in architecture (‘Memory, Modernity and Anachronism at San Juan de los Reyes, Toledo’, in Lateness and Modernity in Medieval Architecture, ed. Kyle Sweeney and Alice Isabella Sullivan, Brill, 2023).
