Have you ever thrown a coin in a wishing well? You might not know it, but that is a kind of ritual! This exhibition will explore the rich ritual history of the rivers of County Durham, showcasing local objects from the Bronze Age to the medieval period and beyond.

Artefacts from the exhibition
Throwing it Out There: the Archaeology of Ritual, Rivers and Rubbish will allow visitors to uncover a story of thousands of years from the River Wear and the River Tees. These rivers hold everything from Roman ritual and medieval pilgrimage, to tales from daily life in the past of love, loss and the occasional dropped children’s toy.
Bronze Age hoards found by a local father-son metal detecting duo will be displayed alongside Roman objects from Piercebridge found by divers Bob Middlemass and Rolfe Mitchinson and finds from Elvet Bridge recovered by underwater archaeologist Gary Bankhead.
This exhibition has been curated by students at Durham University studying for a Master of Arts degree in Museum and Artefact Studies and will provide trails, interactives and other activities for the whole family to enjoy.
