EHRC Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations: an update

Updated: 10am, Tuesday 26 May 2026

The draft Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC)  Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations was published on the EHRC website on 21 May 2026.   Further information, including a short video address from Mary Ann Stevenson, Chair of the EHRC, can be found here Homepage | EHRC

The draft Code incorporates recent Government feedback, considered alongside consultation responses and further legal analysis. It has been sent for the Secretary of State to approve in advance of it being laid in Parliament.

The draft Code of Practice is a substantial document. We will consider it very carefully in respect of practical implications for the University, engaging with our community as we do so. We will keep students and staff updated.

We continue to emphasise that all students and staff at Durham University, which includes our Trans, intersex, queer and non-binary community, must be treated with dignity and respect. We will engage with affected members of the staff and student community on how best to do this within this legal framework.

All students and staff who need support or who wish to discuss any concerns have access to a range of services, including specialist support. They can also get in touch with our EDI team.
