Disease can be a serious threat to garden birds. Follow our two tips to keep our native garden birds safe this summer.
Feed seasonally
In summer and autumn, from 1 May – 31 October, provide small amounts of mealworms, fatballs or suet, ensuring protein-rich food to support chick survival rates
Finches, the species most prone to disease, are less attracted to fat and suet, so risk of disease is likely to be lower.
Seed safely
Adjust the amount you offer based on demand and try to prevent it from getting wet, choose hanging feeders over flat feeders and clean feeders weekly, and refresh water daily.
Fresh food and water is less likely to harbour bacteria or spread disease, uneaten food can attract rodents and there is a higher risk of disease spreading on flat feeders.
