Why learn how to build hedgehog dens?

  • Dens provide shelter for hedgehogs, giving them safe places to hide.
  • Dens create valuable feeding areas by providing habitat for insects and other invertebrates.
  • Building dens properly also provides food and shelter for a range of species.
  • Creating dens supports Durham University’s Hedgehog Friendly Campus work and wider habitat management.
  • Creating dens with natural materials is simple but effective; retaining log piles is an easy, practical way to make spaces more wildlife-friendly.
