Hatfield is a thoroughly modern-minded College with roots in the traditions of the past - we were founded in 1846 to make university education accessible to more students. Above all, we are a community living and working alongside and supporting each other. Our students come from near and far, from large cities and small towns, from many different backgrounds and experiences, and are studying for degrees across the full subject spread. Our ethos is #AllOneHatfield, as expressed in our recent declaration which recognises the enriching value for all of a diverse, inclusive community of equals.
Our student Common Rooms are important parts of our community in College. You will be contacted in September about joining the Middle Common Room, which is open to all our postgraduate students. The MCR plays a key role in putting on a variety of activities and events for its members, social, intellectual, and general interest, and in supporting clubs and societies, as well as providing students with information and advice, and representing students' views in College and the broader university. The MCR greatly enhances the quality of their members’ experience of College life; it is a key, central feature of our College community. I do hope you join the Hatfield MCR and take an active part in College life.

A huge part of being a member of Hatfield College is making new networks through college events and most friends I made have turned out to be lifetime friends. Through the college networks, I did not just learn about the British culture, but diverse cultures since I made friends from different countries, which is really exciting. The main part of our roles as Vice-Master and Assistant Master is to help you to make the most of your time in Durham. We want you to develop as a person whilst you seek to attain the best degree you are capable of. We also work to offer support to those who face pastoral or personal issues during their time at Hatfield.
