MaVis Symposium 2022: Pushing Boundaries-New Approaches to Material and Visual Culture

We are excited to present the first annual symposium put on by the Archaeology Department’s Material and Visual Culture Research and Impact Group. This one-day symposium will take place on Friday, 13 May 2022 in the Appleby lecture theatre (W103) located in the Geography building at the Science Site. We are also very pleased to announce that the keynote address will be given by Dr. Sue Brunning, Curator of the European Early Medieval Collection at the British Museum. Her talk will be on the topic of her work with the Sutton Hoo collection and her consultancy on the 2021 Netflix movie “The Dig”. 

The theme- Pushing Boundaries:

The notion of boundaries, whether real or abstract, literal or philosophical, has been investigated and theorized since ancient times. They are an essential part of identity subject to be constantly negotiated and redefined based on how we ourselves and the world around us change, both past and present.

We seek to provide a platform for postgraduate research students to present their ongoing projects relating to material and visual culture to a broad audience of peers and faculty through a series of interdisciplinary responses, including academic and creative presentations.
