Courses

We offer six distinctive undergraduate degree programmes. Our four single-honours programmes allow you to explore archaeology from a range of different perspectives. Our joint-honours degrees, BA Anthropology and Archaeology and BA Ancient History and Archaeology, combine the study of archaeology with the closely-related disciples of Anthropology and Classics and Ancient History.

Studying in the Department of Archaeology at Durham, you will be taught by experts in the field of archaeology, whose interests cover World, European and British archaeology from the last Ice Age to the post-Medieval period. This wide range of expertise is reflected in the degree structure where, in the second and third levels, you can choose from a wide range of optional modules and dissertation topics which allow you to follow a programme of study designed to suit your individual interests and needs.

All of our programmes provide the opportunity to learn a broad range of social, scientific and transferable skills and embed opportunities for international fieldwork. Our single honours programmes are professionally accredited by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, and the Degree with Placement option is available on all Single and Combined Honours courses.

  • BA Archaeology (F400)

    A single-honours degree that gives the option to study a large range of periods, approaches, and techniques in Archaeology.

  • BSc Archaeology (F402)

    This course combines a general overview of world archaeology with a focus on the range of scientific techniques used to explore the past.

  • BA Historical Archaeology (F411)

    A wide ranging archaeology course that harnesses student passions for history through researching historic sites, material culture and museums.

BA Archaeology (F400)

A single-honours degree that gives the option to study a large range of periods, approaches, and techniques in Archaeology.

BSc Archaeology (F402)

This course combines a general overview of world archaeology with a focus on the range of scientific techniques used to explore the past.

BA Archaeology and Ancient Civilisations (VQ48)

This degree provides an overview of world archaeology, combined with a focus on the great ancient civilisations of Europe, the Near East, and Asia.

BA Anthropology and Archaeology (LF64)

This is a joint-honours degree, which brings together Archaeology and Anthropology to give students a unique perspective on the past and present.

This joint-honours degree combines modules in Ancient History from the Department of Classics and Ancient History with modules in Archaeology.
