Glasshouses

The Department of Biosciences has four glasshouses, each subdivided into compartments, equipped with environmental controls and energy-efficient LED lighting emitting photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) spectra to accommodate multiple environmental growth conditions.

The ICBL Glasshouses have 4 compartments each, all with independent control programs for temperature, photoperiod and humidity.

  • ICBL 1: Fitted with GreenPower flowering lamps and LEDs with spectra which support fast-track breeding programs. Suitable for both Containment Level 1 and 2 work.
  • ICBL 2: Suitable for Containment Levels 1 and 2 experiments, and one room is licensed for DEFRA-regulated research on plant pathogens. With broad-spectrum LED supplementary lighting.

The Quad Glasshouse has four compartments, each fitted with broad spectrum supplementary LED lighting, heating pipes, extract fans and roof vents which are programmable to maintain temperatures within set parameters inside each compartment.

The Botanic Glasshouse, based at the University Botanic Garden, has two compartments, each fitted with LED supplementary lighting, roof vents, and a Hotbox heater to keep the compartments frost-free all year round.
