Associate Professor Teck Keong Seow, National University of Singapore

Abstract

While numerous studies have examined the adoption of the flipped classroom approach in higher education, questions remain about its suitability in Asian contexts, particularly within large‑enrolment courses at public universities in Singapore. This talk examines the implementation of a flipped learning design in a non‑major introductory biology course, where out‑of‑class instructional videos were coupled with in‑class peer learning activities. A central question is whether this combined approach can improve student learning outcomes, a topic explored through evidence drawn from students’ performance. The presentation will also highlight challenges encountered in implementing a peer‑learning‑centred flipped‑classroom model in a large‑enrolment introductory course.

Bio

Currently on the second leg of his sabbatical at Durham University - following the first at Elon University - Teck Keong Seow is an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS). A biologist by training, he is now focused on teaching and learning in higher education. He previously served as Deputy Director of NUS’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, where he helped establish key initiatives including the Undergraduate Teaching Opportunity Programme, which enables senior undergraduates to partner and co‑teach with academic staff. His primary appointment is with the College of Alice & Peter Tan, a residential college within NUS, where he teaches smaller, discussion‑based courses in bioethics and sustainable development. An ardent advocate of corridor‑chats, Teck Keong welcomes conversations with colleagues and students on teaching, learning, and virtually any topic under the sun.
