Visiting Scholars Programme

We welcome applications to our Visiting Scholars Programme. The School of Education is recognised as a leading centre for education research in the UK and internationally, and we have a long history of welcoming visiting scholars from around the world.

Visiting Scholars can be based at Durham for a period of one month to one year. We give preference to applicants whose research interests align with those of academics within the School and who will actively engage with our research community. We therefore strongly encourage prospective applicants to review our academic staff pages and contact a potential academic mentor before applying.

During your visit, you will be expected to undertake a specific research project and to contribute to the School’s research community, including delivering and participating in research seminars.

Shared office space, access to University IT facilities and library resources may be available, subject to availability and resource constraints.

During teaching periods, Visiting Scholars may also be able to attend relevant courses or sessions offered within the School, subject to availability and approval. Attendance is non-credit bearing and does not lead to an academic qualification.

Please note that the Visiting Scholars Programme is not available to PhD researchers. If you are currently a postgraduate research student, please see our information for Visiting Research Students.

We do not provide financial support towards travel, accommodation or living expenses. Visiting Scholars are responsible for ensuring that they have the appropriate immigration permission and other documentation required for their visit. Please see the University’s guidance on studying as a visitor for further information. The University guidance specifically covers those undertaking a period of research at Durham that does not lead to a formal Durham award.
