Spend 10 unforgettable days at Durham University

Throughout the Global Futures programme, you will explore a range of Social Science disciplines, study with Durham academics, take part in interactive sessions, experience collegiate life and develop the skills and confidence needed to prepare for university study in the UK.

Set in a UNESCO World Heritage city, this residential experience brings together academic exploration, cultural activities and international friendships, helping you build independence, strengthen study habits and gain a genuine preview of undergraduate life.

The world through social sciences

Our programme offers 24 hours of academic instruction, delivered by Durham University academics.

Your academic tasters are designed to feel like real university study rather than school lessons.
Sessions are interactive, discussion-based and led by Durham academics who will guide you through contemporary questions and challenges in their field.

You will be encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and approach topics from different perspectives, just as undergraduate students do.

- Archaeology: can the past change the present?
- Education: critical perspectives on learning
- Geography: why do some places thrive while others struggle?
- Government and International Affairs: policy and global power
- Law: how laws shape societies
- Sociology: social inequality and identity
- Sport Science: how far can the human body go?

The Global Futures Summer School is designed for motivated students who are curious about university study and ready to engage in discussion-based learning.

Who should apply?

This programme is suitable for students who:
- are considering studying at a UK university
- want to explore subjects before choosing a degree
- enjoy discussion and collaborative learning
- are comfortable living away from home in a supported environment
You do not need prior knowledge of the subjects; curiosity and willingness to participate matter most.

To apply, students should meet the following requirements:

Age

You must be aged 16–17 for the full duration of the programme.

Academic readiness

You should be performing well in your current studies and be able to participate in academic discussion.

English language level
- Minimum B2 level in English
- You may provide school reports or recognised test results where available.
Application materials
- Short personal statement (approx. 300 words)
- Parent/guardian consent and emergency contact details
- Recommendation from school counsellor or teacher
Selection approach

Places are limited and we aim to create a diverse international cohort. Applications are reviewed holistically, considering interest, motivation and readiness rather than grades alone.

The Global Futures Summer School is a fully supervised residential programme designed to provide a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for all students.

Students are supported 24 hours a day by trained staff throughout the programme.

Supervision
- Dedicated residential staff living in the accommodation
- Sign-in procedures and evening curfews
- Staff on duty overnight
- Structured daily schedule with supervised activities
- Clear rules to help everyone feel comfortable and secure
Welfare and pastoral care
- Trained pastoral staff available at all times
- Support with settling in and adjusting to living away from home
- Quiet spaces and wellbeing check-ins
- Help with homesickness or personal concerns
- Respectful, inclusive community expectations
Safeguarding

All staff working with students follow university safeguarding procedures, including training and appropriate background checks. The programme operates under Durham University safeguarding policies for under-18s.

Health and emergencies
- First aid–trained staff on site
- Support accessing medical services if needed
- Emergency contact line for parents/guardians
- Pre-arrival guidance for families
Parents and guardians will receive full contact details and programme information before arrival so you know how to reach us at any time.

Students experience independence while remaining fully supported — a safe introduction to university life.
Durham is located in the north-east of England and is easily accessible from major UK airports and train stations.

Students should arrange travel to the UK independently. Once in the UK, we provide clear arrival guidance and support to help you reach Durham safely.

Detailed step-by-step travel instructions will be sent after acceptance.

Arrival day

On the arrival date:
- Students check in at their college accommodation
- Staff will be available to welcome and assist you
- A programme orientation will take place once students have arrived
Transfers

Information about recommended train routes and taxi options will be provided in advance.

Travelling alone

Many students travel internationally for the first time. We provide clear pre-arrival instructions and emergency contact details so both students and parents feel confident throughout the journey.

Visa support

Students requiring a visa can request an official confirmation letter after receiving an offer.
