Emeritus Professor Tony Unsworth receives Honorary Doctor of Engineering at Teesside University on 28 April 2022 for his extensive and excellent research portfolio in biomedical engineering and tribology, exploring the functioning of natural and artificial joints, as well as the design of new generations of joints.

The textbook was sent to Dr Grant Ingram as a gift to the department from Chris Robinson, a graduate and Michael Casey, a temporary lecturer in the Department in 1974.

The British Geotechnical Association is the professional association for geotechnical engineering in the UK and a Specialist Knowledge Society of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is the UK member society of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering which has 19,000 members worldwide.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ian Ritchey as Honorary Professor in the Department of Engineering in association with Durham Energy Institute. Ian was formerly Group Chief Engineer at Rolls-Royce, and has a distinguished track record and extensive network of contacts in the Aerospace, Defence, Marine and Energy sectors. He is currently a Non-Executive Director at Tekmar Group, and an advisor to several engineering and technology businesses.

Congratulations to Professor David Toll who has been elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. The Learned Society of Wales has 595 distinguished Fellows elected from all branches of learning and who are prominent figures within their respective disciplines & professions.

Two of our graduates Peter Kirby (Engineering, University College, 2011-15) and William Smith (Engineering, University College, 2011-15) have been working with colleagues at Durham to launch Tred, the UK’s first and only green debit card that helps users spend more sustainably.

We’re pleased to announce we have launched a new Master of Energy Systems Management (MESM) programme today, starting in September 2022. The one year full-time programme, will be taught by the Department of Engineering and the Business School, in partnership with the Durham Energy Institute. We plan to introduce a part-time online and blended option for the following academic year.
