Professor Marcela Cazzoli, Professor of Hispanic Studies and Director of the MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures, has recently shared her insights on the future of language education in a thought-provoking article published by Wonkhe: Modern languages has a future – and it's all about access. In the article, Professor Cazzoli explores how widening participation, inclusive educational pathways, and meaningful engagement with schools and communities are essential to securing the future of modern languages in higher education.
Alongside this recent publication, Professor Cazzoli visited China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing as part of a cultural exchange programme designed to strengthen links between the two institutions and explore opportunities for future collaboration.
During the visit, she met with colleagues and students to discuss shared interests in language education, internationalisation, and the development of collaborative teaching and research initiatives. She also introduced postgraduate study opportunities at Durham University, including the MA in TESOL, the MA in Translation Studies, and a wide range of Master's programmes offered across the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and the wider Faculty.
The visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas, build new academic relationships, and identify areas of mutual interest. It also reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to international engagement and educational partnership, laying the foundations for future collaboration, research initiatives, and student opportunities.
