Professor Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze will introduce three films by acclaimed French director Claude Chabrol at special screenings in Manchester and London this September. The first event takes place at HOME Cinema in Manchester on 15 September, followed by two BFI Southbank screenings on 20 September.
Professor Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze, Professor of French in Durham University’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures, will introduce three films by renowned French director Claude Chabrol at special screenings in Manchester and London this September.
On 15 September at 6pm, Catherine will introduce Chabrol’s La Femme infidèle (1968) at HOME Cinema in Manchester.
Described by HOME as a mid-career masterpiece and a gripping thriller from the director often referred to as the “French Hitchcock”, the film will be followed by a discussion with Professor Dousteyssier-Khoze and Dr Isabelle Vanderschelden.
The screening is presented in partnership with the Alliance Française de Manchester.
Catherine will also introduce two further films by Claude Chabrol at BFI Southbank in London on 20 September.
At 3pm, she will introduce Le Beau Serge (1958), Chabrol’s influential debut feature and a landmark of the French New Wave.
Later that day, at 6pm, she will introduce Violette Nozière (1977), Chabrol’s acclaimed exploration of crime, family and social conventions, starring Isabelle Huppert in the title role.
Together, the three events offer audiences an opportunity to encounter Chabrol’s cinema across different periods of his career, with introductions from a leading scholar of French cinema and culture.
The events highlight the School of Modern Languages and Cultures’ engagement with cinema and visual culture, bringing academic expertise to wider audiences through collaborations with leading cultural and cinema institutions.
Professor Dousteyssier-Khoze’s contributions will provide audiences with an opportunity to explore Chabrol’s films in their wider cultural and cinematic contexts.
