MLAC alumna Sophia Smith-Galer celebrates the publication of How to Kill a Language, a Sunday Times Book of the Week, following her journey from Durham student journalist and performer to award-winning reporter and author.

From Durham student life to international recognition

Sophia Smith-Galer, alumna of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) and St Mary’s College (2016), has published her new book How to Kill a Language, which has already received national recognition, being named a Sunday Times Book of the Week and featured on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme.

The book explores the stories behind endangered languages and the social, political and cultural forces that shape whether languages survive or disappear.

A Durham experience that shaped a successful career

At the recent Chancellor’s Circle dinner, Sophia reflected on how her time at Durham helped shape her career as a multi-award-winning reporter, author and content creator.

She highlighted the important role that student journalism with Palatinate and her involvement in university opera productions played in developing her confidence, creativity and communication skills.

Sophia’s achievements also include being part of the winning Durham alumni team on two occasions in the television quiz programme University Challenge, demonstrating the breadth of interests and talents developed during her time at Durham.

Inspiring the next generation of language enthusiasts

Sophia’s career journey highlights the value of studying languages and the many pathways that language skills, cultural awareness and communication expertise can open.

Her new publication is a reminder of the continuing importance of languages in understanding communities, preserving cultural heritage and navigating an increasingly interconnected world.
