Hispanic Studies takes El Cid to schools

Oundle School and Bourne Grammar School recently welcomed Durham’s Hispanic Studies team for sessions exploring El Cid, the legendary 11th-century Castilian hero. The visit also sparked interest in developing further links between the schools and MLAC.

Dr Lara Escudero Baztan and Professor Axel Pérez Trujillo, Director of Hispanic Studies, recently visited Oundle School and Bourne Grammar School to deliver engaging sessions on El Cid, the legendary 11th-century Castilian hero.

The sessions gave students a taste of university-level Hispanic Studies, exploring Spanish history and culture through one of the best-known figures of medieval Spain.

Sharing opportunities at Durham

Lara and Axel also had the opportunity to speak with students about studying languages, cultures and Hispanic Studies at Durham.

The visits offered an insight into the teaching and opportunities available in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC), while allowing students to engage directly with academics in the field.

Developing future links

The response from both schools was very positive. Oundle School and Bourne Grammar School are interested in arranging further engagement with Durham, while Lara has also been invited to return to give another lecture in January.

The visits are part of MLAC’s ongoing engagement with schools, helping prospective students discover the subjects, teaching and opportunities available through the study of modern languages and cultures.
