Annual Leslie Brooks Lecture featuring Silvia Albert Sopale on Black theatre in Spain, followed by academic discussion and reception at St Cuthbert’s Society, Durham.

Durham University’s Department of Modern Languages and Cultures is delighted to announce this year’s Leslie Brooks Lecture, which will take place on Thursday 21 May at 3pm.

This year’s guest speaker is Silvia Albert Sopale, a distinguished Spanish Afro-descendant actress, writer, and cultural organiser. She will deliver a lecture entitled “On Black Theatre in Spain”, exploring questions of representation, performance, identity, and the historical and contemporary presence of Black theatre practices in Spain.

The lecture will be followed by a collective discussion led by Mike Thompson and Abir Hamdar, and chaired by Rosi Song, encouraging an open interdisciplinary exchange across theatre, cultural studies, and modern languages.

The event will take place at the Tom Percival Annexe, Parson’s Field, St Cuthbert’s Society, Durham Parson’s Field, St Cuthbert’s Society. The formal programme will conclude by approximately 5pm, followed by a wine reception.

There is no need to register in advance, and all staff, students, and members of the University community are warmly encouraged to attend. Colleagues are particularly invited to share the event with students and supervisees who may be interested in theatre, Spanish culture, postcolonial studies, or performance studies.

What is the Leslie Brooks Lecture?

The Leslie Brooks Lecture is an annual public lecture hosted by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. It brings internationally recognised scholars, artists, and cultural practitioners to Durham to share work that engages with languages, cultures, and global perspectives.
