Dr Michael Barcomb has recently published new research on academic integrity and AI and presented work exploring the environmental implications of generative AI in language teacher education at the EUROCALL Spring Festival 2026.
Dr Michael Barcomb, Assistant Professor in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, has recently shared two developments from his research on artificial intelligence and language education.
Dr Barcomb has contributed a new chapter to a volume edited by Sarah Elaine Eaton and Rahul Kumar, leading scholars in the fields of academic integrity and artificial intelligence.
The chapter forms part of a collection examining the implications of AI for academic integrity and higher education.

Dr Barcomb also recently presented his research at the EUROCALL Spring Festival 2026 in a paper entitled “Environmental Responsibility in CALL Teacher Education: A Pedagogical Lens for Selective GenAI Use.”
The research draws on data collected during his Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) teacher education course last spring. As part of the course, student teachers calculated and reflected on the environmental impact of their use of generative AI.
The research considers how environmental responsibility can be incorporated into teacher education and how future language teachers might make more selective and informed decisions about when and how to use generative AI.
Following the conference presentation, a manuscript based on this research has been submitted to a leading journal for publication.
