New MLAC publication explores the cinema of Ventura Pons

A new special issue of Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinemas explores the work and legacy of Catalan filmmaker Ventura Pons, bringing together perspectives on his cinema, cultural memory and representation. Edited by Durham’s Santiago Fouz-Hernández, the issue is now available from Intellect.

A special issue on the films of the late Ventura Pons (1945-2024) has just been published in Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinemas (21.3). The issue is edited by Santiago Fouz Hernández, who also authored an introductory piece (open access).
 
The issue brings together essays on some of Pons’s best-known films, from his first feature, Ocaña, retrat intermitent(1978), to some of his lesser-known work, including several of his most recent films. It features outstanding contributions from esteemed colleagues Alberto Mira, Carolina Sanabria, Antoni Maestre Brotons, Raquel Medina, and Alfredo Martínez Expósito, alongside personal pieces by Pons’s biographer Anabel Campo Vidal and actor Josep Maria Pou.
 
Ventura Pons directed more than 30 films during a lengthy and very successful career. In 2010 he visited the School of Modern Languages and Cultures to give a public talk and to present his film Barcelona, a map at the Gala Theatre.
