The Bigas Luna Tribute announces new events in Los Angeles in collaboration with American Cinematheque, Durham University, Instituto Cervantes LA, Egeda US and Algarrobo Films.
This new and specially curated event will feature screenings of the 1990s ‘Iberian Portraits’ Trilogy (Jamón jamón, starring Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, Huevos de oro/Golden Balls, starring Bardem, Benicio del Toro and Maribel Verdú, and La teta y la luna/The Tit and The Moon, starring Mathilda May) and other Bigas Luna classics, including the horror cult movie Anguish (1986), starring Zelda Rubinstein and Michael Lerner, and the rarely seen Caniche/Poodle (1979).
Screenings at American Cinematheque will be introduced by Bigas Luna specialist Prof Santiago Fouz Hernández (School of Modern Languages and Cultures, Durham University) on March 17th, 18th, 19th, 22nd, 23rd and 24th and Spanish/Hollywood filmmaker F Javier Gutiérrez (Rings) on March 20th. The new Instituto Cervantes Los Angeles will also host a special and free screening of the posthumous documentary Bigas x Bigas (2016) with a pre-recorded presentation by director Santiago Garrido Rua on March 21st.
Screenings ProgrammeThe AERO Theater in Santa Monica (1328 Montana Avenue, CA 90403) will host the screenings of the Iberian Portraits Trilogy (35 mm prints with English subtitles) on Friday March 17th at 7.30pm (Jamón jamón, 1992) and on Saturday March 18th at 7.30pm a double bill with Huevos de oro/Golden Balls (1993) and La teta y la luna/The Tit and the Moon (1994).
The historic LOS FELIZ 3 Theater in Hollywood (1822 N Vermont Ave, CA 90027) will host a rare screening of the controversial Caniche/Poodle (1979, with English subtitles) on Sunday March 19th at 7pm and the horror cult film Anguish (1986, in English) on Monday 20th at 7pm, which will be introduced by filmmaker F Javier Gutiérrez (Rings).
The new Instituto Cervantes in Los Angeles (3375 Barham Blvd, 90068) will host a FREE screening of the documentary Bigas x Bigas (2016), based on more than 300 hours of video diaries filmed by Bigas Luna himself in the last few years of his life. Co-director, Santiago Garrido Rua, will introduce the film via pre-recorded video. The screening will be followed by a roundtable discussion.
NB Encore screenings of the trilogy at Los Feliz 3 (March 22nd-24th) and any additional guests will be advertised nearer the time here and at American Cinematheque.com, where tickets for all screenings can also be purchased in advance.
Public TalksProf Fouz Hernández will talk about the research behind this project at San Diego State University (March 14th), the Instituto Cervantes Los Angeles (March 21st) and The University of Texas at Austin (March 27th).
The Bigas Luna TributeSince launching in 2015 The Bigas Luna has surpassed 100 screenings and has visited more than 20 cities worldwide, including San Francisco, Barcelona, Mexico City, Sydney, Melbourne, San José, Vienna, Madrid, New York, Cleveland OH or Copenhagen. Cities in the UK have included Newcastle, Manchester, and Edinburgh, and more will be announced later this year.
The events have included art exhibitions and special food menus related to the films and have attracted considerable local, regional, and national coverage, over 30 sponsors and more than 20 guest speakers, including academics and members of the Spanish Film Industry.

Fouz is also the editor of the book El legado cinematográfico de Bigas Luna (Tirant lo Blanch, 2020). He is currently completing the monograph The Films of Bigas Luna for Manchester University Press.
