Congratulations and Welcome to the Music Department

Congratulations on your successful application to Durham!

We are delighted that you'll be joining us soon, and we hope your time in Durham will be fun and fulfilling.

As you'll quickly come to realise, Durham enjoys a rich musical life: the University boasts numerous choirs, orchestras, opera, jazz and early-music ensembles, and the Department runs its own concert series, featuring brilliant musicians from around the world.

Our main buildings are located within Durham's historic UNESCO World Heritage Site, close to the magnificent 11th-century Cathedral and Castle. In this inspiring setting, we maintain a distinguished tradition of scholarship stretching back to the 19th-century. At the same time, we pride ourselves on being a dynamic centre of creative and intellectual innovation.

On behalf of the Music Department, I wish you all the very best for your time at Durham.

The lecturers always have an interesting and exciting approach to teaching, and they allowed me to discover many new areas and aspects of music

Instrumental teachers’ professional input is also really helpful when it comes to learning some of the tricky music played by the top Music Durham ensembles, allowing you to fulfil both your solo and ensemble performing potential. As well as the performance side of things, the department’s modules also cover conducting and composing, as well as a huge range of theoretical modules from Music Psychology to Theory and Analysis. We are so lucky to have access to such a diverse course with staff who are so genuinely invested in our academic and musical development, so make the most of each opportunity that comes your way, and enjoy every moment of your time at Durham!

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
