Congratulations and Welcome to the Music Department

Congratulations on your successful application to Durham!

We are delighted that you have chosen to study here and hope that your time in Durham will be challenging and fulfilling.

As you will come to see, Durham enjoys a rich musical life: The University boasts numerous choirs, orchestras, opera, jazz and early-music ensembles, and the Department runs its own annual concert series, which attracts soloists from around the World.

We are very fortunate that the Music Department is located within the historic UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising the magnificent 11th-century Cathedral and Castle. We have a distinguished tradition of scholarship stretching back to the nineteenth century, but we pride ourselves on remaining a dynamic centre of creative and intellectual innovation.

Instrumental teachers’ professional input is also really helpful when it comes to learning some of the tricky music played by the top Music Durham ensembles, allowing you to fulfil both your solo and ensemble performing potential. As well as the performance side of things, the department’s modules also cover conducting and composing, as well as a huge range of theoretical modules from Music Psychology to Theory and Analysis. We are so lucky to have access to such a diverse course with staff who are so genuinely invested in our academic and musical development, so make the most of each opportunity that comes your way, and enjoy every moment of your time at Durham!

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
