Seminar

Our departmental research seminar talks will take place on Wednesdays during term time from 15:00 to 16:30, in room 005, 48 Old Elvet, Durham, DH1 3HN.

This week's speaker is Dr Kian Mintz-Woo from the University College Cork.

Kian is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Philosophy at the University College Cork (Ireland).

Title: "What do normative philosophers have to contribute to society?"

Abstract: Normative philosophers (inter alia, political theorists, moral philosophers, applied ethicists) develop arguments which link normative positions to practical (and theoretical) judgments or conclusions. This might sound anodyne, but I use it as a basis to explain what normative philosophers can add to policy discussions as well as to the moral reasoning of members of the public as a whole. The goal is to motivate a conceptually interesting ground for several forms of public philosophy.
