'A more-or-less recent history of essence'

Abstract:

There is a commonplace characterization of recent debates about essence and necessity. I will present two examples where looking back at the history of philosophy of modality makes an important intervention in these debates. We'll also therefore see that the commonplace characterization needs revising.
