Postdoctoral funding

The Department is very pleased to support applications to post-doctoral funding competitions from candidates working on topics relating to its wide range of research interests. Applicants wishing to apply for an Early Career Fellowship through the Department will receive assistance in the form of feedback on individual draft applications, especially the project proposal. The key schemes are:

  • British Academy International Fellowship - application time usually January - March. This call is for applicants working outside the UK and not holding UK citizenship at the time of application. Applicants should have completed their PhD by the time of the start date of the Fellowship.

Please note that all post-doctoral applications are subject to an initial round of selection procedures within the University. Applications to all schemes are subject to internal review in the Department and Faculty level.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Durham University

Due to the volume of applications received, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities holds an internal competition to select applications for support through to the full competition.

In advance of the British Academy’s call for applications opening on 2 July 2025 please find below the details of the internal process for your chosen department.

Candidates are required to check their eligibility for the scheme before applying.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Department of  Philosophy, Durham University

The Department of Philosophy invites expressions of interest from outstanding candidates who wish to apply for a prestigious British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship through Durham University.

We welcome enquiries from eligible candidates particularly those related to the research themes in the department, or to relevant University Research Centres and Institutes (Institutes and Centres - Durham University). Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University.

For the internal competition candidates are asked to secure a mentor in the Department/School to support their application. They should submit an expression of interest (i.e., an up-to-date CV and 1 A4 page summary of the research proposal) to the mentor by 12 noon, Friday 18 July 2025.

Working with their mentor, candidates will be required to complete and return Durham University’s internal application form, available via the Arts and Humanities Research Team (artsandhumanities.researchteam@durham.ac.uk) by 12 noon, Friday 1 August 2025.
