Framwellgate School Students at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition 2026

Students from Framwellgate School Durham showcased their tuberculosis drug discovery research at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2026. Working with Durham BSI's Professor Patrick Steel and Dr Alistair Brown of Newcastle University, the students designed and tested novel drug candidates targeting multi-drug resistant TB, demonstrating the impact of research-led STEM education and the next generation of scientific talent.

Framwellgate School Students Showcase Tuberculosis Drug Discovery Research at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

Students from Framwellgate School Durham presented at this year’s Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, sharing the outcomes of an ambitious STEM research project focused on the global challenge of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (TB).

The team took part in the Royal Society’s prestigious Young Researcher Zone, part of the 2026 Summer Exhibition. The sixth form students presented their work on the design, synthesis and validation of new drug candidates aimed at combating antibiotic-resistant TB. The project was delivered through the Royal Society’s Partnership Grants scheme and brought together students with researchers Professor Patrick Steel and Dr Alistair Brown, providing them with the opportunity to take part in cutting edge scientific research.

The exhibition, held annually at the Royal Society in London, celebrates scientific discovery and innovation from across the UK. The Young Researcher Zone highlights excellence in STEM, with just 12 school-academic or industry STEM projects selected from across the UK. The event gives the young researchers the chance to discuss their findings with visitors and demonstrate interactive activities inspired by their work at the highest level.

 

Sharing their research

Students from Framwellgate School presented their research into one of the most pressing global health threats of our time. Tuberculosis remains a significant worldwide challenge, particularly as strains resistant to multiple antibiotics continue to emerge. Through their project, students gained hands-on experience of the drug discovery process, from understanding molecular design principles to evaluating potential therapeutic compounds.
