The Judith Howard Lecture 2026
In June 2026 Dr Kasia Tych (University of Freiburg and University of Groningen) visited Durham to deliver the 2026 Judith Howard Lecture, the flagship annual lecture of the Biophysical Sciences Institute (BSI).
2026 Judith Howard Lecture
The Judith Howard Lecture celebrates outstanding early- to mid-career researchers working at the forefront of the biophysical sciences worldwide. Named in honour of Prof. Judith Howard CBE FRS, a founding member of the BSI, the lecture recognises excellence and innovation across the global biophysics community.
In her lecture, “Advanced biophysical techniques such as optical tweezers can uniquely access the structural dynamics of biological macromolecules directly, in real time,” Dr Tych presented cutting-edge approaches for probing biomolecular behaviour at the single-molecule level. The event attracted approximately 100 attendees from across the Faculty of Science and offered insights into inventive new methodologies and applications developed in her research.

Dr Tych (image above) joins a growing list of distinguished Judith Howard Lecturers, reflecting the lecture series’ reputation for showcasing the emerging leaders in contemporary biophysics.
Nominations for the 2027 Judith Howard Lecture are now open. For the first time, the process will be based on self-nomination. Further details are available on the BSI’ Judith Howard Lecture website.
