Dr Sarah Wieten and Dr Rebecca Jackson will give informal short academic talks on critical appraisal of metrics at the beginning and end of life, with particular attention paid to Apgar and SOFA scores. This will be followed by a substantial discussion time.

Speakers

Dr Sarah Wieten (Co-Director, CHESS) is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department. Her research interests are philosophical and empirical; her doctoral project was a study of epistemological and ethical issues in Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM), a movement in medicine that emphasizes the use of randomized controlled trials.

Dr Rebecca Jackson (Postdoctoral Research Associate, DRP) is a philosopher and historian of measurement in science and medicine, focusing on clinical measuring practices and methodology. Her research prods at the assumptions we make about measurement done well—is it always the case that “standardized” is better? If our notion of “validation” or “precision” requires many trials, how do we measure well if we only have “one shot,” as when measuring something that is individual to a single patient?
