What is Pro:NE?

Postgraduate Research Opportunities for the Northeast/Network for Equity (Pro:NE) is an ambitious, multi-partner regional research project funded by the Office for Students. Durham University has joined together with Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside Universities to develop a 4-year programme (ending in January 2026) to mobilise and increase the number of students of colour undertaking post-graduate research in the North-East universities and to ensure that they receive the support that they need. Access and participation for students of colour is limited by persistent inequalities that exist throughout Higher Education but is of prevalence in the Northeast which has some of the lowest numbers of students of colour in England.

Awarded on applicant excellence

The background and proposal for how the student will utilise the funding to engage with their academic programme in a more meaningful way. The funding is aimed at helping to overcome barriers to the academic programme engagement. Be that equipment costs, transport costs, or potential for conference costs that students could/would attend to the benefit of their studies.

The participation funding will be paid directly to the successful applicant to the amount of £250, the fund is for home student PGT and PGR candidates from racially minoritised ethnic backgrounds only, specifically: Asian British, Black, Black British, Caribbean or African Mixed or multiple ethnic groups. Deadline for applications: January 2024

Eligibility

  • Home student from a racially minoritised ethnic people background, specifically: Asian British, Black, Black British, Caribbean or African Mixed or multiple ethnic groups. Please see the Government's guidance on ethnicity facts and figures for more details
  • Please note: to be classed as a home student, candidates must meet the following criteria:
    • be a UK National (meeting residency requirements), or
    • have settled status, or
    • have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or
    • have indefinite leave to remain or enter
  • Candidates must be in Post Graduate Taught or a Post Graduate Research Student at Durham University

How to apply

  1. Applying for funding

    Application should not exceed two sides of A4 and should include:

    • Study level
    • Subject/Research interests
    • A clear outline of the intended use of the participation fund funding
    • Short EDI statement on why the student is eligible for the funding and how the funding would benefit their engagement and learning experience

    • Applicants who submit an incomplete application to the Pro:NE Team will not be considered
