The Scholarships are designed to support an individual who has been injured, wounded, or sick as a direct result of military service or an immediate member of their family.
Durham University and our generous supporters hope to make a real difference to the lives of Military Scholars. The intention is to provide a life-changing opportunity for committed students who have made the personal choice to return to education following a period of military service. Scholars can be either an individual who has been honourably discharged or their direct family member. Preference will be given to applicants who have been injured, wounded or are sick as a direct result of military service or their direct family member.
Funding can be used as either maintenance support or payment towards tuition fees

One scholarship is available for applicants studying any of the undergraduate programmes available at Durham University
Two scholarships are available to applicants who are applying to study undergraduate STEM subjects with preference given to applicants looking to study Engineering
Service in the British Armed Forces
Someone who has served in The British Army, The Royal Navy, The Royal Marines or The Royal Air Force.
An immediate family member of an ex-service person - someone who is related to the ex-service person by blood, marriage or legal agreement and who is financially dependent or co-dependent on the income and provision of the ex-service person.

As part of the scholarship, application applicants are asked to provide copies of discharge papers and where relevant evidence of illness or injury directly resulting from serving in the military, to be sent by email to scholarship.application@durham.ac.uk.
Durham University and the British military have a long and illustrious history of association. Many alumni have laid the foundations for nationally significant military careers during their studies in the North East. Furthermore, Military Scholars will become members of St. Cuthbert's Society, one of the University's oldest student communities, which has itself an extensive military heritage. Many staff and students fought in both the First and Second World Wars and, in 1946, the Society was re-founded by veterans of the war.
The University is indebted to Patrick (Paddy) Walker, an alumnus (St. Cuthbert's Society 1980-83) who initiated the Military Scholarships programme in 2011 by creating the first two Scholarships in honour of Lieutenant Abraham Slowe - 6th Batallion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and Brigadier Harry Walker - 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guard. One of the two inaugural scholars became the first person in his family to go to University.
Taking Paddy's vision forward, we are delighted to be able to launch an expanded programme with increased support from a number of trusts and foundations. Thanks to their support, and generous contributions from individual donors, Durham University is able to award scholarships of up to £20,000 per scholar. The Scholarships are designed to support an individual who has been injured, wounded, or sick as a direct result of military service or an immediate member of their family.
