Durham University is a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champion programme, Britain's good practice employers' forum on sexual orientation.
We received Stonewall Diversity Champion status in 2012. This shows our clear commitment to working to support lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. The Diversity Champion programme promotes a good working environment for all existing and potential staff and students and helps to ensure equal treatment for those who are lesbian, gay or bisexual. It brings together top employers from across the country to promote diversity in the workplace.

Every year on November the 20th, we remember and honour the lives of trans and gender-diverse people reported murdered in the past 12 months.
Durham University aims to make all staff and students feel welcome, safe, supported and valued. This is part of our ongoing work to foster an inclusive culture of respect. To this end, through our policies and initiatives we endeavour to create an environment in which gender diverse and trans-identifying individuals can utilise their skills and talents to the full without fear of prejudice, bullying and harassment.
Our Gender Identity Policy includes guidance on supporting staff and students going through transition or gender reassignment.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month occurs each February and is a celebration of the history of the LGBT+ community worldwide.

17 May is an important date for LGBTQ+ communities; the celebration brings together millions of people from all over the World, to recognise human rights for all, including countries where same-sex acts are illegal.
At Durham, we celebrate this day with the rest of the World as a way of raising awareness and showing solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. More than ever we need to show our support for those LGBTQ+ people who continue to face harassment, discrimination and even violence for being who they are.
