DCAMP workshop: Measurement and Models: from ancient philosophy to public health
Speakers include: Dr Sam Bennet (Geography, Durham), Dr Giulia Bonasio (Classics, Durham), Dr Alex Campolo (Geography, Durham), Dr Laura Castelli (Cambridge), Prof Peter Heslin (Classics, Durham), Dr Rebecca Jackson (Philosophy, Durham), Prof Luca Mari (LIUC, Italy), Dr Francis Mckay (Newcastle University and Gateshead Council).
The 'Measurement and Model' workshop will explore what kind of knowledge is acquired via measurements and models, how this knowledge is acquired, what purpose it serves (in particular the relation between measurement and models and right/due measure), and the role of models in the acquisition of knowledge. This theoretical investigation approaches measurement not only from a quantitative perspective, but also from a qualitative and normative perspective (e.g. what is the right/due measure of a certain phenomenon/circumstance/behaviour?).
The workshop will approach the question of the epistemic status and role of measurement and models from the perspective of ancient philosophy, the science and philosophy of measurement, AI ethics, digital humanities, and public health.
