Department of History Building

A panel discussion marking Women’s History Month 2021 as part of the History Now! series of talks organised between the Durham History Department and the Gala Theatre:

Women’s labour has too often been neglected or marginalised in different periods of history. In Britain today the gender pay gap is widening because of the impact of the global pandemic. But has women’s contribution to the workforce always been hidden from history? How might we measure and interpret ‘work’? And how has the relationship between gender and labour changed over time?

Rachel Clamp, Lara Green, Julie-Marie Strange, and Jessica Rushton will explore these issues in a discussion ranging from County Durham to Republican France to the Russian Revolution, between the pre-modern and modern era. They will explore the role of carers, servants, and activists in a discussion that puts in the history of gender and labour in historical perspective and challenges some of the myths about gender inequality that endure today.
