We believe that mathematics has something for everyone, and we actively engage with audiences beyond the university through festivals, museum collaborations, public talks, and educational initiatives.
Here are some of the public engagement events and programmes we've been involved in recent years:
Durham University annual science festival brings together researchers, schools, and the public to explore the wonders of science. Our department participates with interactive mathematical demonstrations and engaging activities that showcase the creative sides of mathematics as well as its practical applications in science. In the past, we have explored patterns of randomness, constructed giant fractals with more engaging activities to come in future years.
Many researchers in our Department are keen on bringing mathematics out of the lecture hall and into other venues. We regularly participate in Pint of Science, a global festival that brings scientific research to informal settings. Over the years (and over a pint), our researchers have shared fascinating insights into their work and engaged in lively discussions with curious minds from all walks of life.
We have also partnered with diverse cultural venues to bring mathematics to unexpected places. From Locomotion in Shildon to Yorkshire cathedrals, we lead explorations on how mathematics connects with history, culture, and everyday experiences.
These collaborations allow us to reach new audiences and demonstrate the many connections of mathematics.
When a large science-themed event comes to the North East, we like to be part of it. We have been an integral part of the DU Science 100 campaign, supported the Railway 200 celebration, and were one of the main contributors to the Beach Spectres land art project, an exploration at the intersection of mathematics, art, and nature centred on the recent discovery of aperiodic monotiles (or “einsteins”, as someone likes to call them).
We are passionate about expanding our public engagement activities and reaching diverse audiences. Whether through established festivals, innovative partnerships, or new creative ventures, we are keen to share our love for mathematics with as many people as possible.
If you're interested in collaborating with us or attending one of our events, we'd love to hear from you!
