We are committed to ensuring that talented students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue mathematics at the highest level. Through targeted programmes, strategic partnerships, and dedicated summer schools, we work to break down barriers and support underrepresented groups in accessing higher education in mathematics and STEM subjects.
Here are some of the widening participation activities and programmes we've been involved in recent years:
Futures in STEM is a comprehensive programme designed to support students from underrepresented backgrounds in pursuing STEM degrees. Carefully chosen undergraduates provide subject tutorials and mentoring for the sixth-form participants. These regular online meetings, together with inspiring guest lectures and face-to-face meetups at open days, help students to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to apply to competitive universities and thrive in mathematical disciplines.
We are partners of the Durham Sixth Form Centre and the newly established Durham Maths School. Our role in this partnership is one providing a glimpse of the beauty and utility of mathematics to underrepresented groups such as women and pupils from deprived areas. This involves a range of mathematical enrichment days and aspiration-building activities provided for free to students who might face additional barriers to higher education.
We contribute to several residential summer schools hosted by Durham University that are specifically designed for students from underrepresented backgrounds:
We strongly believe that mathematical talent exists in every community, and we are dedicated to ensuring that no student is held back by their circumstances. Through continued partnerships and sustained engagement, we are working to make mathematics at Durham accessible to all who have the passion and ability to succeed.
