About Us

University College or Castle as we are lovingly known is a thriving community within Durham University. We have around 1100 undergraduates and 400 postgraduates and members of University staff are attached to the College through our Senior Common Room. More than 500 of our students live in one of University College’s five accommodation areas, including the Castle itself and four nearby residences (Bailey Court, Moatside Court, Owengate on Palace Green;  Kepier Court on Claypath).  All Castle members share a common aim: learning through academic and co-curricular engagement.

We are the founding college of Durham University

From clubs and societies to mentoring and community outreach programmes, from leadership development opportunities and robust student support to sports competition and fine arts performance, all University College students (livers in and livers out) have the opportunity to participate and get involved in the community.

One of the first things many visitors ask is: 'is it a real Castle?' Yes! We are lucky to care for our historic building, some of which dates back to the 11th century. And while our Norman heritage provides a compelling backdrop for student involvement and study, it is our people who make University College flourish.  Supporting our students is a dedicated staff team across Operations, Catering, College Office and connecting with colleagues in Palace Green Library who oversee public tours.

University College students have access to a range of facilities to support learning and the wider student experience: College library, gyms, laundry facilities, kitchenettes, study spaces, practice rooms, and more.  Together, Castle students and staff care for our cherished facilities to ensure they are accessible to students and custodians of the future.
