Six Arts and Humanities subjects ranked in the UK top five in Guardian University Guide 2027
Six subjects across Durham University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities have been ranked among the five best in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2027, with all seven featured subjects placed in the top 10.
Music and English achieved particularly strong results, both ranking second in the UK. Classics and Ancient History, Philosophy and Theology and Religion were each placed fourth, while History was ranked fifth.
Modern Languages and Cultures also secured a place among the UK’s leading subjects, ranking ninth.

- Philosophy: 4th
- Theology and Religion: 4th
- History: 5th
- Modern Languages and Cultures: 9th
With six subjects in the top five and all seven in the top 10, the results highlight the strength and breadth of teaching and the student experience across the Faculty.

The Guardian’s subject league tables assess universities using measures including student satisfaction with teaching and feedback, student-to-staff ratios, spending per student, continuation rates and graduate careers. Durham University was also ranked sixth overall in the UK in the 2027 guide.
