In partnership with St Mellitus College, we shall organise a Day Conference to explore, in interdisciplinary fashion and with student participation, historical and current accounts of the meaning and value of intelligence for Christian theology and spiritual formation. Given the burgeoning research, production, and marketing of what is widely referred to as ‘artificial intelligence’, we ask what is theologically at stake in appropriating the term ‘intelligence’ to describe AI and the related concept of ‘machine learning’? Given the current societal salience of so many questions around AI, the project has potential to challenge, refine, and renew accounts of perception and cognition, specifically embodied cognition, in ways that would inform Common Awards ministerial education, especially in spirituality, pastoral theology, and ethics. The conference also has potential to impact the form of this teaching and learning, insofar as responding to our current context of “AI” could stimulate new consideration of the place and character of intelligence within Christian vision and formation. In addition to the conference itself, we plan to offer an evening Public Lecture, as well to find a way of publishing conference papers, either in print or online.
