This project has two avenues. First, a researcher will be employed to carry out quantitative study exploring how/if TEI’s already teach content on 1) transatlantic slavery and the involvement of churches/missionary societies, 2) discussions on reparations (not limited to economics). The researcher will also ask, if they are indeed already taught, in which module are they covered, and how the subject is approached and will create reports of the diversity of each TEI student body. This researcher will also approach TEI’s in the Caribbean (Codrington, United Theological College of the West Indies in Jamaica) asking the same questions.
Once the results from the quantitative study is received, the data will be analysed and used to help create a framework of best practice for how to teach this subject comprehensively and sensitively to students. Comparisons between teaching practice and method from UK TEI’s will be made with those from the Caribbean, and discrepancies in approach will be highlighted and discussed. A framework of best practice will be developed by the researcher, Dr Victoria Turner, Rev Dr Calton Turner and Rev Canon Dr Peniel Rajkumar and will be published in a journal that will allow for better visibility (Practical Theology, International Review of Mission).
