Studentships and Scholarships

There are a variety of funding opportunities available to support your postgraduate studies. PhD Studentships support students studying for a PhD, covering tuition fees and typically contributing to living expenses. Scholarships support students at all levels, including Master's students, and offer a range of financial support.

PhD Studentships

Durham University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for fully-funded PhD Studentships. Each year the Department has a number of funded PhD positions available. We welcome highly motivated, strong candidates across a wide range of research areas.

The available studentships will be finalised towards the end of Autumn, however studentships often include:

  • EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Awards (DLA): Research in priority areas including Data Science, AI & Robotics, Health Sciences, Quantum & Advanced Sensing, Energy Futures, Molecular Sciences, and Critical Infrastructure. Collaborative projects with external partners encouraged.
  • STFC PhD Studentships: Research in areas covered by STFC's remit, including Particle Physics (Theory) and Astronomy, solar and planetary science.
  • China Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarships: Open to applicants from Mainland China, supporting excellent doctoral research across the Faculty of Science.
  • Global Grand Challenges Studentships: Focused on SDG13: Climate Action, addressing climate change and building a more resilient global future.
  • Durham Doctoral Training Fellowships: Enable students to study for a PhD in one of the Department's leading Research Groups, while acquiring valuable teaching skills. Typically include a 1 year teaching position alongside a PhD Studentship and the Fellow is assigned both a supervision team and a mentor from the Education & Pedagogy Group supporting teaching-related activities.
