Durham University Fellowships
Addison Wheeler Fellowships (IAS)
Funded through the bequest of Addison James Wheeler, these 3 year fellowships help young researchers of outstanding promise to pursue original ideas, free from teaching and administrative responsibilities. These have no residency restrictions.
Christopherson-Knott Fellowships (IAS)
An internal fellowship scheme for Durham staff. Effective 2019/20 the IAS has re-purposed its Christopherson Knott Fellowship to support the IAS’s ambition to incubate novel, ground-breaking, and interdisciplinary research. The Christopherson Knott Fellowship funding will contribute towards the buyout support from departmental duties of each project’s two principal investigators.
A Daphne Jackson Fellowship is a unique fellowship designed to return STEM professionals to their careers after a break. Fellows normally carry out their research part-time over 2 years, in a university or research establishment in the UK. The fellowships are flexible and include a tailored training programme designed to update skills and knowledge and support you in your return to research. Durham University will fund 2 Daphne Jackson Fellowships on a biennial basis.
UK Fellowships
Royal Society University Research Fellowships
This scheme is for outstanding scientists 3-8 years post-PhD who are in the early stages of their research career and have the potential to become leaders in their field. Funding is for 5 years with a possibility to extend to 8.
Royal Society Newton International Fellowships(50% funding for 2 years)
Aimed at researchers wishing to build and maintain links with leading researchers in the UK.
Royal Society - Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellowships
This scheme is for outstanding scientists in the UK at an early stage of their research career who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances such as parenting or caring responsibilities or health issues. Female candidates are particularly invited to apply.
Leverhulme Fellowships (50% funding for 3 years)
Three year Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers but with a proven record of research.
Durham University runs an internal selection process. Departments must submit prospective candidates by the internal call deadline. Candidates will then be selected to go forward for the scheme.
Three year fellowship intended to give early career scientists or engineers of exceptional promise an opportunity to conduct a research project of their own instigation
Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or have equivalent research experience; however, there are no eligibility rules based on years of post-doctoral experience or whether you hold (or do not hold) a permanent academic position.
UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) Scheme
This cross-UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) scheme will support early career researchers and innovators with outstanding potential in universities, UK registered businesses, and other research and user environments including research councils' institutes and laboratories. The scheme welcomes applications from both UK and international applicants.

BBSRC David Phillips Fellowships
The David Phillips Fellowship (DPF) will provide support for researchers wishing to establish their first independent research group. Awards are for 5 years, and include personal salary and a significant research support grant to enable fellows to establish their own independent research group. Applicants should have at least 3 years of active postdoctoral research experience.
Ramsay Fellowships (50% funding for 2 years)
British Ramsay Fellowships are awarded annually by the Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust to postdoctoral chemists in the early stages of their career, so that they may conduct original and independent research at universities in the United Kingdom.
Lindeman Trust Fellowships (for USA)
The Lindemann Trust Fellowships are awarded to graduates of exceptional promise in both the pure and applied physical sciences who have shown capacity for producing original research. Up to three grants a year worth $30,000 each for postdoctoral scientists to carry out research in the USA.
EU Fellowships
The UK will associate to Horizon Europe, the successor programme to Horizon 2020, subject to the ratification of the overall deal and finalisation of Horizon Europe programme regulations.
