Congratulations and Welcome to Chemistry

Welcome from the Head of Department

Chemistry Head of Department

Congratulations on your results!

I'm delighted that you've chosen Durham University's Department of Chemistry and I look forward to meeting you this October.

I'm sure that your time in Durham will be both an intellectually stimulating and personally rewarding one. The University has much to offer in terms of not only your degree programme but also activities outside of your studies and is a wonderful place to spend three or four years as an undergraduate.

Our aim during your degree course will be to give you the best Undergraduate chemical education possible, and to provide a supportive but intellectually challenging environment in which you can thrive. We'll aim to provide all the opportunities you need to learn the essentials of chemistry, but also expose you to (and involve you!) in some of the cutting-edge research that goes on in our Department.

I look forward to welcoming you to Durham this October.

Professor Chris Greenwell

Welcome! You've done a fantastic job doing your A Levels. From the quality of the course to societies and sports, there’s a wealth of opportunities. Try everything that piques your interest! Your time as a chemist here will be rigorous yet rewarding. The lecturers are extremely approachable, and through the department's championing of pastoral care I’ve always felt supported. Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
