Department celebrates outstanding postgraduate research achievements

Doctoral Research Excellence Awards

This year's Doctoral Research Excellence Awards have been awarded to Mohammad AlAttar, David Fairbairn and Hadeer Ghonem.

The award recognises PhD researchers who have demonstrated outstanding excellence throughout their doctoral studies in Mathematical Sciences, acknowledging the quality, impact and originality of their research.

Awards recognising academic excellence

Several postgraduate researchers have been recognised for exceptional academic achievement during the current academic year.

• The Nick Brown Memorial Prize, jointly awarded by the Departments of Mathematical Sciences and Physics in memory of a much-missed colleague, has been awarded to Despoina Dimakou (Physics). The prize recognises excellent academic performance and has traditionally supported research-related travel opportunities.
• The Euan Squires Memorial Prize, awarded annually in memory of a much-missed colleague, has been awarded to Taghreed Almasoud and Hei Jie Lam. The prize recognises overseas postgraduate students who have achieved outstanding academic performance during the academic year.
  The St Cuthbert's Society Postgraduate Prize has been awarded to Jiayi Zhang in recognition of outstanding academic achievement.

Recognising research potential and achievement

• The Willmore Pure Mathematics Postgraduate Award has been awarded to Daniel Disney and Loic Cosyns. Presented in memory of Professor Tom Willmore, the award recognises PhD students in Pure Mathematics who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and academic potential.
• The Winton PhD Thesis Prize has been awarded to Adam Stone and Iolo Jones for the best PhD theses submitted in the areas of statistics and data science, recognising the high calibre of doctoral research being undertaken within the Department.

Supporting future research opportunities

The Quayle Postgraduate Bursary has been awarded to David Lanners. Granted jointly by the Departments of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, the bursary supports research students in undertaking visits to other universities and research institutions, enabling them to develop key aspects of their research and participate in conferences, workshops and summer schools.

These achievements showcase the talent, dedication and ambition of our postgraduate researchers and demonstrate the vibrant research culture within the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
