The Stephenson Junior Common Room (also known as the JCR) is the representative body of undergraduate students at Stephenson College. Each College at Durham University has a JCR or equivalent, and it is their role to represent undergraduate students, champion their voice, and enhance their University and College experience! In essence, the JCR is a group made up of Stephenson students just like you, who want to be involved with their community and have a good time whilst doing so! The JCR represents Stephenson's undergraduates to the rest of College (the MCR, SCR and College), the Durham Students’ Union and the wider University.
The JCR is an opt-in organisation, with a levy attached to membership, which you can find out more about in the ‘Why become a JCR Member’ section of the JCR's website. Our JCR is responsible for running some of the biggest and best events of the year, like our Winter and Summer Balls and Stevo Day! They also run welfare campaigns, such as talks on housing and finances or events to help students destress during exams, and a range of different events throughout the year.
Our JCR, like most Common Rooms in Durham, is run by elected student volunteers who form the Executive Committee and Non-Executive Committee, all of whom are supported by committees of JCR members.
Students can be involved in many different ways, from being the captain of a sports team or the president of a society, to helping run one of our famous college balls or helping run Freshers' Week as a Freshers' Representative. Your involvement, however big or small, really does make a huge difference! It is the community that makes the JCR really special and no one person is more important than another, we aim to provide equal opportunities to all, but ultimately the most amazing university experience.
